I love the way some poems make me research new things. This poem is interesting read without knowing anything about the painting about which it's written. Once I did some additional reading about the painting's creator and how he is well known for his original style that uniformly holds narrative, or story-telling, meaning, only then did I really appreciate the poems tone.
The poem was intriguing enough to get me to find out why the painting is named "Fall of Icarus". It wasn't the painting that made me want to research anything more. So, kudos to you W. H. Auden for opening my eyes!
I enjoyed this poem as it brings a very "real" sense of daily life and how things happen all around us without anyone noticing, or choosing to see.
